Choosing your own future
Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation provides solutions to the needs of people with disabilities through the work of its five centres specialising in education, vocational training, brain injury rehabilitation, skills development and mobility as well as an information service.
Nikki has spent three years at the Foundation’s Development Centre. His time here has been invaluable and he outlines how it has made a difference to him: “I’ve grown in confidence, my problem solving abilities have improved and I’m now much better at meeting and dealing with day to day challenges”. Nikki enjoys being a DJ. “I like to play all kinds of music, usually anything from the 1970s up to modern stuff, house music especially.”
Whilst at the Centre Nikki particularly enjoyed his music lessons and has made lots of friends during his stay, now he has moved on but he will miss his friends amongst the staff and students.
Centre Principal Dominic Lodge notes: “Independence also brings with it new responsibilities. Many disabled people are deprived of being able to take responsibility for decisions with their needs and choices often decided by others. Our students have a will and a way to express their own desires, we are merely here to help and assist them in finding their way.
Our work is thriving thanks to a dedicated and highly professional staff, committed volunteers and loyal supporters who help make our work possible. We are all proud of our achievements, but the success always belongs to the students.”
