Bowled Over
Following nerve and muscle damage to his back and lower limbs, James from Uddingston, South Lanarkshire, is now a full time wheelchair user. He is also one of over 400,000 disabled people who benefit through the Motability Scheme.
Motability is a national charity which helps people with disabilities to become mobile by making a wide range of cars, powered wheelchairs and scooters available, through contract-hire and hire purchase schemes.
“Before joining the Scheme I had to use public transport and it was very difficult “ says James. “I originally read about Motability in a local newspaper and my Vauxhall Zafira is my sixth car through the Scheme. It has been specially adapted for me with push pull hand controls and a steering knob and there’s plenty of room for my wheelchair too.”
James runs a disabled club for indoor carpet bowls and archery and he is also the current Scottish wheelchair carpet bowls champion for South Lanarkshire
“Having a Motability Scheme car has given me back my freedom and made life so much easier. My wife, Margaret, and I together with our two sons, can go out as a family for day trips or visit relatives and friends. As the boys are growing up fast, its great that I can take them to and fro to their ever increasing activities, and its reassuring to know I have a reliable car.”
“Being a full time wheelchair user doesn’t stop me from trying new things and having a car through the Motability Scheme has allowed me to maintain my independence and made a tremendous difference to my life.”
Your support for Action Not Disability can continue to give people like James freedom and independence to achieve their dreams.
